USB 3.0
What do you mean when you say SuperSpeed USB or USB 3.0?
The USB 3.0 is considered to be the most powerful revised version of the Universal Serial Bus. This was created in the year 1996 by a group of companies which was pioneered by Intel in order to make things simpler, and allow connections between the computer and the different peripheral devices even more convenient. Moving to present time, 2009, the USB 2.0 became an established interface in a standard PC for a great number of years, but up to now, there is still a need to improve such technology and come up with a hardware intended for faster computations and would be able to handle bandwidth demands that can be considerably great.
In the year 2007, during the company’s Developer Forum, Intel was able to showcase the SuperSpeed USB. On November 17, 2008, the very first version of USB 3.0 was completed. With this being the case, the said USB Implementers Forum or USB-IF took over the management of specifications and at the same time, published relevant technical documents that were needed in order to make it possible for the people in the technological industry, as well as the manufacturers of harder to start the development of products, that are part of the protocol for USB 3.0.
Basically, the USB 3.0 would be able to assure you such features:

  • The transfer rate may go as high as about 4.8 Gbps
  •  The bus power has also been increased and would now be able to properly make a connection for devices that require higher power.
  • New features for managing the consumption of power.
  • Data transfers that are now in full duplex, and would be able to support newer types of transferring.
  • New and improved connectors as well as cables for those that run on data transfer of higher speed but are backwards when it comes to compatibility with the devices that run on USB 2.0.

Is USB 2.0 faster than the USB 3.0?
The answer to this question is actually both a yes and a no. The USB 2.0 allows a lot of applications to have a sufficient bandwidth for different kinds of devices as well as hubs and allow it to connect from one computer to the other. But because of the increasing needs being cast upon the transferring of data with video content that is of high definition, storage devices that can hold terabytes of data, digital cameras that have a high count on digital camera, as well as mobile phones that possess multi-gigabyte capacities, and media players that can be carried wherever you go, which go to show that 480 Mbps is no longer considered to be very fast these days.

How is the USB able to attain added performance level?
The USB 3.0 is able to attain an added performance level through various technical changes that have been made. Possibly the change that be easily identified is the physical bus that has been added and similar to that of the bus of the USB 2.0. Meaning to say, if USB 2.0 actually has about 4 wires which include power, a certain pair for what is said to be as differential data, as well as the ground, then the USB 3.0 is able to add about 4 additional for each two pairs of the receiver and the transmitter, which means that it can make about 8 connections with the use of a connector or a cable.
In addition to this, the method for signaling, even if it is still directed by the host, is now said to be asynchronous and no longer polling. USB 3.0 makes use of a data interface that can go to two directions, compared to the arrangement of the USB 2.0 which is only half-duplex. This means that the data may only go to a single direction at a given time. With all of these things in mind, it would show that there has been a great improvement added and developed unto the USB 3.0.
